Spreewaldhof Spreewaelder Saure Gurken (Spreewald Gherkins)

Pickled dill gherkins · Spreewaldhof · Pantry specialties · Spreewald / Brandenburg

9/10must-try

Why it's worth it

Spreewald gherkins are an EU protected geographical indication (PGI) from Brandenburg, and became a cult East German icon after the film Good Bye Lenin!. The herb-and-horseradish brine gives them a more layered, crunchier character than everyday Czech naklaadaacke, so a jar is a protected regional specialty a Czech traveler cannot simply buy at home.

Taste

Crunchy, dense gherkins in a sour-spicy brine of dill, horseradish and aromatic herbs; tart and complex, never limp

If you know Czech shelves

Czech naklaadaacke okurky / sterilovane okurky are the category analog, but the Spreewald PGI brine is more herbal and the gherkins stay crunchier
